Private and local business
The main branch of the economy is agriculture with development standards above the national average. The field area is very fertile and a number of small farms have been established combining agricultural with livestock production. In addition to cultivation of arable crops of all kinds (both in open air and in green houses), vine and fruit trees are also extensively cultivated. Animal breeding activities account for 9.075 heads of cows, 7.045 goats and sheep, 4.485 heads of pigs, 900 heads of perissodactyls, 62.500 heads of birds (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc.) The light and food industry is represented by two flour mills and one plastic factory. Also, there are a number of small works for lumber, aluminum profiles, marble, primary materials for construction, as well as diary and milk factories. Other types of economic activity such as trade, handicrafts and services have taken on added growth in the recent times. In 2007, the commune numbered 165 private undertakings, registered as either physical or juridical entities, of which 102 involved in trade, 27 in production, 36 in services, etc. In the village of Meglush, a great marketing facility has been established covering not just the commune area, but also territories beyond the commune. Commune revenue in 2007, compared to 2004-2005 has seen an increase of 6.7 million lek or 46.3 per cent. Employment in the commune is given in the table below:
